CASE STUDIES

1. Importance of extra income over education: Reeta is about a 10 year old girl. Her mother is a maid serving as domestic help in the area. Instead of sending her to regular school, the mother was taking Reeta along with her to work so that she could help and add to the income. Since our centre works from 3pm to 6pm which are normally leisure hours even for domestic servant, Reeta could find time to attend our centre. She was therefore able to study and fulfill her ambitions of studying in a school. Now the mother slowly realized the importance of her education and she willingly sends her to school, paving way for the child ambition to study in a regular school. Her two younger sisters have also started attending the centre. It was remarkable that Reeta’s performance was among the best in the school as well as the centre.
2. Hatred for studies and bad habits: Ashish aged 12 years is the son of slum dwellers. His father is a roadside vendor and mother works as domestic help in the area. Ashish developed hatred for studies in the school and was a very poor performer. The parents were sick of his bad company and bad habits. It appeared that he will not be able to study further. The school did not provide special care for such achild. It was badly affecting his younger siblings also. He joined the centre in June’2012. Initially he was very irregular and his hatred for studies was quite apparent. His special interest and aptitude were identified. At the centre he received special care and his problem was solved by the teachers. Slowly he became regular and started learning. Gradually his performance in the school improved along with behavior and today he is one of the best students at the centre as well as in the regular school.
3. High marks do not specify good at studies: A number of children of the centers used to get good marks in their school’s exams but still were very weak in studies. We tried to find the reason for the same. The schools in which they study do not have good teachers and infrastructure is very poor. Their main aim is to get their fees and finding other means from where they can earn extra money. So they pass all the children irrespective of their performance in the exam. Further a Government order signifies that no children upto the class of 8th should be failed. We strive to improve their basics and raise their educational standard and it has been reflected in the performance of Manish, Madhuri, Anshu, Jyoti, Govind, Saksham, Rakesh, etc.
4. Improving financials also: Some private schools even in slums charge an exorbitant amount against school fee, books, uniform, etc. These children cannot afford it and have to leave the school. We realize the gravity of the situation and ask them to take admission in government schools where expenditure against fees, uniform, books is very little. As far as the studies are concerned, we will teach them at our centre. This helps in saving substantial money for their family.
